“Airflow” is one of 5 small bicycle themed paintings I completed recently. Multiple layers of collage elements, magazine clippings, and paint compose this painting.
While seemingly mundane objects, bicycles are a significant part of the history of transportation and an important icon of the twentieth century.
Whether nostalgic in your mind or not, bicycles were the first way for many of us to get around and signify independence and freedom.
A rusted bottle cap graces the bottom right of the painting, capturing a small part of everyday life. In addition this rusted object symbolizes degradation and the lack of permanence in our society but also of the cycle of decay.
Much like the cycle of a bicycles’ spinning gears, the cycle of decay is one of eventual renewal.
